Jesus once said that he was “the way, the truth, and the life,” and that no one could be with his Father in heaven without accepting this truth (John 14).
Jesus is “the Way” because of his perfect death on the cross and his miraculous resurrection from the dead. We were dead to our sins, our disobedience; because we sinned we disqualified ourselves from living in eternity with God. But God wouldn’t stand for that separation, so, in his mercy, he sent his son, Jesus into humanity to pay for our sins. Jesus never sinned, obedient unto the very end of his life, but he decided to die on a cross for our sins. He didn’t deserve to die, but he chose to so that we could have life with God. This is ONLY possible because of God’s grace and Jesus’ sacrifice. No one else in the history of the world could have done this (Ephesians 2).
So, it is only through faith in Jesus Christ – not by being a good person or doing good deeds – that we can be restored to a right relationship with God. In fact, the Bible says that because of Jesus, we are “friends of God!” (Romans 5)
